Report

Typical for our annual trip to John O'Gaunt fishery, the day presented a hint of autumn with light frost on the ground which soon gave way to a fine, dry and mainly clear day. There was some initial concern that the fishery might be overstocked with anglers as another party were already dipping their lines as we arrived with 14 extra rods but this angst was soon put to rest by the fish being extremely co-operative in both lakes.

The visit provided a first in our statistics, being the first time we 'cleaned up' with full bags and were able to weigh in an hour early. The fish were mostly in very good condition with only the odd fin being less than full. They took most flies offered be they lures, nymphs or dries. Iain McAllister tempted the largest bag at 16lb 12oz which also had the largest fish at 6lb 8oz and most fish were in the 2.5 to 3.5lb range - detailed results are below.

For future trips, remember that the fishery is light on domestic facilities so, best bring your own victuals and drinking water. The slightly higher than average fee of £40 for 4 fish is offset by the quality and availability of the trout - if you want to start a beginner, this is the place!! A matter of interest was that the fishery entertained 43 anglers that day, and the fish were still coming as we left.

Thanks to all those who replenished the prize wine lake and to all those who contributed at Chalk Springs - we now have a 'few bob' and bottles to take prizes to the Autumn Cup match at Duncton.
