The annual 'Icebreaker' meeting took place on 13 March at Meon Springs with a total of 12 anglers taking part (including 1 member of the Rother Valley Fly Dressers Guild). Everyone caught their quota of 2 fish to retain and the winner, Bob Jones, was decided on by the additional 2lbs for the only eligible catch and release rainbow. Mike Collins took the honours for the largest fish at a mere 2lb 13oz. There were plenty of fish but all were under 3lb and many people bagged up early and went on to C/R. Unfortunately, the C/R was recently stocked with browns to the frustration of myself and Dave Morton who kept catching these out of season fish which did not add to the score though they had good 'funfactor'. Detailed results are above. The number of attendees was disappointingly low at 12 as 18 attended a year ago. Is this a sign of the financial times I wonder? Weather conditions were relatively kind in being a dry, though cool, day with a chilling breeze - about as good as it comes at this time of year. The water was gin clear enabling fish to be easily sighted and, in the main lake, they were easily tempted. Overall, a most pleasant day with the service provided by Keith and the Meon Springs staff being well up to their usual high standards. We were saddened to hear of the unfortunate demise of Pasco James who had worked at the fishery until September 2009 and passed away recently at the tragically young age of 21. Ted P |
