Report

12 RN&RMAA members augmented by 2 Fly Dressers Guild members fished at Duncton for the Autumn Cup on Saturday 7 November. The low weights and number of fish caught however, did not reflect the action on the day with many fish hooked and lost including 2 large fish in the 'well over 6lb' bracket. Dave Morton lost one of these at the net after a prolonged and lively fight.

Overall winner was Ted Grant with 4 fish for 6lb 13oz which included the largest fish to count at 2lb 6oz earning him 'Mings Mug' for the largest fish. Jonathan Williams of the Flydressers Guild took one of 2lb 9oz in the only other 4 fish bag of the day but his catch was not counted in the RN&RM competition. The Runner Up Cup was hard earned Dave Morton with 3 fish for 4lb 2oz (pity about the one that got away).

Also presented was a new trophy for the largest fish caught over the season in our monthly visits. Donated by Bob Jones it consists of a toothbrush holder figure suitably and skilfully modified by Bob as an angler holding a fish representing 'The one that didn't get away'. The inaugural winner was Robbie Pearce for his 7lb 4oz beastie caught at Chalk Springs in September.

Duncton remains a very 'comfortable' fishery with excellent facilities including a well warmed and equipped clubhouse, the 4 lakes being set in beautiful surroundings. The day was bright and dry but started with a cutting wind creating a good ripple on the water. Later on the wind dropped and there were plenty of dragonflies around though not much surface action from the trout. Lures were the order of the day with Jon Williams saying that a fast stripped blob brought his fish up to take on the surface. Ted Grant went deep with a similar style fly.

Post Event note: 2 large fish (one in double figures were taken the following day - could these be 'the ones that got away'). Though generally small, all fish caught were in good order and a few browns were taken but are not recorded as they were out of season.

Overall a difficult water to fish but a good one to separate the skilled anglers from those less able and a pleasant spot to while away the last event of our 2009 season.

The next event will be the 'Icebreaker' in early March 2010.
