The second boat fixture of the season was very well supported with 22 anglers attending, making it one of the best turn outs for quite some time. Chew is renowned for high quality sport early in the season and most anglers had enjoyed a good outing the previous fortnight against Kingsbridge Heavyweights. This, along with what appeared good weather conditions filled all with eager anticipation. Our AMFC team had secured a good victory at Bewl the previous day and was oozing confidence with 3 bag limits out of 4. With an England eliminator being fished the following day the water was sure to have been recently stocked, so how hard could it be? It seemed a well balanced draw, having tried as fairly as possible to pair Associates in a boat with a Serving member and when possible less experienced anglers with those who could help their development. Always one of most relaxed competition, I was surprisingly impressed that everyone made the administration straight forward with prompt correspondence and by turning up on time. Reports were that fish were still in the same areas which had remained consistently productive since the opening day, Wick Green, North Shore and in open water behind Denny Island. It was also noted that over the previous week rod averages had dropped as the fish had become more finicky and seemingly dispersed in more isolated and smaller shoals. With this in mind I was pleasantly surprised to connect with a fish on my first cast, well that lasted for all of about a minute until I successfully managed to lose it. DI3 and a team of Diawl Bachs seemed to be the method as over the next few drifts I landed 1 and missed several more whilst my boat partner couldn't touch a thing, he was on a floating line. That's as good as it got, after the initial flurry of activity it all dried up. The constant traffic of boats passing with glum looking anglers, with empty bass bags and much head scratching indicated everyone was struggling. Those that had managed to scratch out a few fish had found fishing a team of static buzzers to be the best method. The wind picked up resulting in most boats remaining in the more sheltered water behind the island with some in Villice bay, an area which seemed equally unproductive. Meanwhile Tony Wilkinson my boat partner continued to persevere with the floating line and a team of nymphs and an Orange blob attracter. Needless to say his determined perseverance paid dividends and he eventually succeeded in winkling out 4 fish. One came to a static cruncher, 2 to the orange blob one of which so suicidal it eventual managed to hook itself on the hang after at least its 5th attempt to take the fly on the surface. There seemed no pattern to Tony’s success apart from determination and concentration. No matter how I tried to mimic his methods it proved fruitless. Even when I did manage to hook into a 'slab' the fish gods were toying with me as it turned out to be a pike, a PB of about 20lb I’m told but still a pike. To add insult to injury if I'd been in the Pike competition being held that day I would have scooped the cash prize pot for the biggest fish, it just wasn't my day! The up shot was Tony's 4 fish bag was the best of the day at 7lb 7 oz leading the Associates to a winning margin of 7lb 1oz with a total of 16 fish for 33lb 4oz. RN took 13 fish for 26lb 3oz but the result was a much closer affair than in the last few years. The rod average was a meager 1.3 with 6 anglers blanking. Bob Jones maintained his record of taking the biggest fish with a rainbow of 2lb 12oz. Tony and Bob both received a prize of a fly box kindly donated by Bob Handford from the Bristol Water team. It was without doubt a very hard days fishing with perseverance and confidence leading to the Associates edging a well deserved victory. More importantly and pleasing was that the pairing( I mean draw) paid off as despite the difficult conditions one of our novices to boat fishing managed to catch when other established fishermen blanked. Well done Ron Tutt, thanks to your tuition and thoughtful coaching we have 'hooked' a new Serving member which must be the best catch of the day! Al |
