| Only 15 anglers were able to contest the RN v BT match at Chew on a blustery wet day. Unfortunately BT were forced to field a much depleted team with only 3 anglers available so the event could not be considered a competitive match and it was conceded the RN would retain the trophy. Although the day started bright and dry, by the beginning of the match the weather had changed becoming wet and blustery and it stayed like that all day. This made fishing very uncomfortable with most boats seeking more sheltered water in Villice bay. The few boats that ventured out into the more uncomfortable open water did manage to find several concentrations of fish between Dennys Island and the Dam and also close in along Walley bank. During the course of the day, as the weather deteriorated, the water coloured up and the areas near the Dam became less productive. In the afternoon those in Villice Bay started to locate fish more consistently, especially tight into the reed beds in the vicinity of the cages. Despite the difficult conditions and no bag limits being caught at least there were no blanks recorded. 57 fish were caught resulting in a rod average of 3.8. Chris Anderson recorded the best bag with 7 fish for 14lb 14oz, closely followed by BTs Les Cooke with 7 fish for 14lb 5oz. Best fish of the day was a high quality fully finned brown of 4lb 9oz which was caught by Al Mundy on his last cast of the day. It fell to a red holographic ribbed cormorant booby fished on the point, whilst fishing the washing line in Spring Bay. Despite the poor weather and challenging conditions every one had a good day and no one blanked and the quality and size of the fish was very good. Perhaps the inability of the BT team to field a full team was a blessing in disguise. The 3 anglers that did make it recorded a rod average of 5.6 where as the 12 RN anglers returned a rod average of 3.3. This fixture is always a popular and enjoyable event and was again this year. Steps have been identified to ensure BT have every opportunity to field a more competitive team for next season’s event. | |||
