| Fishing Report | |||
| Following a week of very heavy rain and cold windy weather, the prospects of good fishing conditions were less than favourable for the Jutland Cup competition at Bushyleaze. At least it gave Mark Glass the opportunity to model and trial the new waterproofs funded by the Sports Lottery! We need not have worried, as despite the overnight flooding and wet start, the day pightened up, temperatures rose and the fishing was superb. After partaking in a tot of rum to welcome in the new season, the competitors dispersed around the water attempting to seek a vantage point. The strong wind whippping down the fishery made conditions more challenging but those that paved the harshest of the elements at the most westerly point of the lake reaped the benefits and bagged up early. As the number of pleasure anglers dwindled and conditions improved the catch rate also improved with a majority of the competitors catching their bag limits with relative ease. There was no specific 'killer' method or fly as fish were coming to most methods and all sorts of fly pattern. These ranged from Buzzers on the bung, Diawl Bachs, large cats whiskers to mini cats, Montanta, drowned daddies, blood worm, boobys, blobs and some flies that can only be desribed as 'half a chicken'. As always seems the case when we fish this venue, the trout were in excellent condition, very hard fighting and equally important, they tasted great (so the blokes at work said). I have to congratulate Tim Small and his team for their outstanding effort in maintaining the fishery at a very high standard. I know Tim was up a majority of the previous night responding to flood alerts and opening sluices to prevent further flooding. I also would like to thank Tim, as despite the lack of sleep, or perhaps to due to the lack of sleep, he kindly donated a BFR reel as a prize. The results were always going to be a close run thing and true to form they were. Those having bagged up early saw their weights bettered as the larger fish came later in the day. Dave Morton for a long time looked the favourite to win but both Chris Anderson and then Mark Glass both weighed in with identical weights of 15lb exactly to share first place and will hold the trophy for 6 months each. Right at the death, Bob Jones solved the dilemma as to who should receive the prize Reel donated by Tim, by weighing in with a superb pown trout at 6lb 12oz. It was a great start to the season and not wanting to wish the season away, we will all be looking forward to returning at the end of the year for the Trafalgar Shield. | |||
