| The carp section held the first match of 2008 on Velocity Angling Centre (VAC) near Glastonbury. VAC is a new carp water to the south west (used to be a mixed fishery) with some cracking fish to go at and should become one of the top waters in the region in years to come. Shane Alway is the owner and was the RM point of contact for the event. Shane is ex Army and hosts a number of matches throughout the year on his complex. Leading up to our match the numbers were looking healthy and all places were filled. Unfortunately as the date grew closer some members dropped out, for a number of reasons, leaving us with seventeen for the match. With the loss of competitors we decided to leave swims empty rather than peg the water again. Every swim giving the angler a good chance of a fish, so we thought! The night before we met for a BBQ and a few drinks overlooking the lake, giving us food for thought for the coming match. After catching up since our last event (Todber) we slowly slipped of to our vans and bivvies in anticipation for the following day. After a good nights sleep we were up and preparing for the match. Before long Shane was down and we were walking the lake listening to his top tips and admiring some of the very carpy features VAC offers. Even the fish put in an appearance for us during the walk round. Once complete we were ready for the draw and in true fashion Billy was out first and Kev was out last, 'Kev next time you need to pinch Billy's lucky coin'. With the rules confirmed and competitors setting up all was looking good for a fish or two. During the day the fish were showing in front of a number of swims. With the hot day drawing to an end we all settled in and awaited the sound of an alarm signaling a carp had been hooked. Unfortunately the wait for a carp lasted until the finish horn although the alarms did sound, with two swans and a pike being the culprits. The match ended with no carp being caught. We were all, including Shane, surprised that no one caught as we were on fish and fishing well. VAC does have a lot of weed and with the high pressure the fish were not playing. Even when they were faced with a boilie an inch from their mouths! Once back at the car park we decided not to have a cast off to decide a winner leaving all who attended with a point for turning up. With no winner we decided the prizes that were offered up by Hinders, VAC and Palltrax would be an extra addition to our next match at Sandhurst. Overall VAC captured our interests for the future and I can see us using the complex again next year. I can't see us finding anywhere else that will provide such a great feeding option! Velocity is going to be stocked again later in the year with enough fish to give the water a healthy stock of carp. Before the stocking it will be interesting to see how the BCAC get on in June as all competitions have struggled to catch up till now. Without doubt the local lads should get amongst the fish as is the case with most competitions. So here is the challenge, to catch from relatively new water under pressured circumstances. So, I am looking forward to our next match at Sandhurst where hopefully we will nail a few. I would like to thank all who attended for making it such an enjoyable weekend, the fish are a bonus. |
