Devonport Match Dits 2007

January February March April May June July

January

To start off the PCAA Shore League 2007 eight anglers fronted to fish ideal weather conditions for the New Year.

High Tide was 2144 at a height of 5.1m and proved to be very productive on Two Jetty. This is were a specimen record for a Whiting of 39cm and a Thornback Ray of 46cm was caught by Tom Worthy.

Needless to say with these two catches Tom Worthy was the overall winner with a respectable length of 4m 74cm.

In second place was Andy pidson who was once again fishing from Two Jetty. Andy scored 3m 53m and produced a good dogfish of 62cm to gain a foothold in this species for the New Year.

In third place was Robbie Robson. He was fishing from his usual haunt of Three Jetty and scored 2m 02cm.

After speaking to various people on the night, tactics of fishing down the wall seemed to be less productive than those who were fishing about thirty yards out. This tactic gained vital points in the species of Pout, Poor Cod and Whiting.

The PCAA always welcomes new anglers and on this occasion Mark Williams and Gus Craig competed in their first PCAA Shore league event to see in the New Year.

The next Shore match (Round Two) is on 21st Fepuary and please watch out for 'jumping concrete blocks' lying around the dockyard.

February

Round Two saw some horrendous fishing conditions. With heavy rain and only two anglers fishing we knew that the fresh water in the river would make it quite a struggle for those concerned.

High Tide was at 2004 with a height of 5.4m and with two anglers we decided to chance it on Rubble Jetty.

Besides getting soaking wet through the fish were starting to show half way through the night. Dave Webber was fishing on the Right hand side of Rubble Jetty and caught five decent Pollock (Species Record 38cm), Poor Cod, Pout and Scad (Species Record 34cm), which was the first catch of 2006 and 2007. With this winning combination he took First place with a length of 3m 04cm.

In second place was Robbie Robson who was fishing on the left hand side of Rubble. Robbie scored 2m 07cm with species of Poor Cod, Pout and Rockling (Species Record 22cm). Here the tactic of looking for fish further out proved to be less successful and no Dogfish were to be found.

Due to commitments at sea the anglers were in short supply but hopefully in Round Three more anglers will show.

The next Shore match (Round Three) is on 7th March.

March

Round Three commenced in good weather and with three anglers turning up we knew the fish would be limited. Limited was to say the least.

Once again there was a lot of fresh water in the river and bites were few and far between. High Tide was at 1954 with a height of 5.2m and with three anglers we decided to proceed onto Rubble Jetty.

The tide was turning quite fast when we arrived and towards the end of the night it mellowed into a still stagnant mill pond. Dave Webber was fishing once again on the Right hand side of Rubble Jetty and caught four decent Pollock and two good Dogfish (Species Record 66cm). The fish took their time biting and this gave him a winning score of 2m 68cm.

In second place again was Robbie Robson who was fishing in the middle of Rubble Jetty. Robbie scored 1m 23cm with species of one Poor Cod, one Pollock and one Dogfish. Unfortunately Robbie hooked a Conger near the end of the night which seemed 150cm plus. After various methods of trying to place it into a drop net the hook snapped and the species was lost.

In third place with a score of Zero was Andy Olliman. Well Done Olli.

The next Shore match (Round Four) is on 04th April.

Round Four commenced on a warm and sunny evening and with three anglers we were keen to fish the night in with lots of fish. This was not the case as you probably have already heard.

High Tide was at 1953 with a height of 5.3m and all three anglers spaced out on Rubble Jetty.

The night started really poor and the vision on 'blanks' were sprouting to mind but needless to say as the night started to darken the Pollock started to show.

Dave Webber won the round on the night (third time running) and was fishing in the middle of Rubble Jetty. Dave caught five Pollock of medium size and had a winning score of 1m 67cm.

In second place (third time running) was Robbie Robson who was fishing at the right hand side of Rubble Jetty. Robbie scored 1m 34cm with species of two Pollock and one Dogfish. Check out his 'devilish' numbers in his total!

In third place with a score of 65cm was Andy pidson who managed to catch two Pollock.

Hopefully in the next shore match (Round Five) more anglers will be back in the UK to give make a change in the table and there will be plenty of fish to ping onto the dockyard.

The next Shore match is on 9th May

May

Round Five commenced on the 9th May and four anglers were met with wet and windy fishing conditions. With fishing in the previous months of a poor standard we hoped for our luck to be in and to have a chance of catching something decent.

High Tide was at the later time of 2306 with a height of 4.7m. Two anglers were on two Jetty and the other two anglers on Three Jetty.

The night seemed to look quite promising as the bites started to show quite near to the jetties but as the night went on they slowed down.

Robbie Robson won the round on the night and was fishing on Two Jetty. Robbie caught two Dogfish, three Blenny's, one Gold Sinny, one Scorpion (2007 Record 10cm) and one Ballan Wrasse. Robbie had a winning score of 2m 40cm.

In second place was Marc Duncan (Paddy) who came close to winning and had a score of 2m 24cm. Paddy was fishing on three Jetty. Paddy caught one Gold Sinny, three Blenny's (2007 Record 20cm), one Goby (2007 Record 10cm), one Pollock, two Ballan Wrasse (2007 Record 29cm) and one Whiting.

In third place with a score of 73cm was Andy pidson who managed to catch one Pollock and one Ballan Wrasse.

Hopefully fingers crossed Round six will be free from the elements and provide all anglers with ideal fishing conditions.

The next Shore match is on 20th June.

June

Round Six commenced on the 21st June and five anglers turned up on the night. One of the anglers Neil Barnes was not competing but was there to collect bait in the form of Pout and Ballan Wrasse for the Conger Competition in the next few weeks. Another angler was pought along by Paddy Duncan and was experiencing the continually wet weather routine that we have been managing for the last five Shore match Rounds. I bet he said at the end of the night "Never Again". I didn't manage to catch his name but his nickname was 'Dolly Parton'.

High Tide was at the later time of 2225 with a height of 5.0m. Three anglers were on One Jetty and the other two anglers on Two Jetty.

From the start on One Jetty the bites were coming in thick and fast and the Ballan Wrasse was showing well in this area. On Two Jetty this was not the case and they had a slow night throughout.

Robbie Robson won the round on the night and was fishing on One Jetty. Robbie caught three Blenny's, two Gold Sinny, five Ballan Wrasse (2007 Record 32cm) and Two Rocklings (2007 Record 34cm). All his winning species were caught on short snoods using ragworm. Robbie had a winning score of 3m 26cm.

In second place was Marc Duncan (Paddy) and had a score of 1m 01cm. Paddy was fishing on one Jetty. Paddy caught his Five mini species, one pout and one Rockling.

In third place with a score of 88cm was Andy Olliman who managed to catch pout and mini species.

I said in the last Round that hopefully fingers crossed Round six will be free from the elements, well let's hope this pings us luck for Round Seven and provide all anglers with ideal fishing conditions!!!

The next Shore match is on 18th July.

July

Round Seven commenced on the 18th July and four anglers fished the competition. The members were Robbie Robson, Andy Olliman, Tom Worthy and pian Roach.

High Tide was at 2122 with a height of 5.2m. Two anglers were on two Jetty and two anglers on Three Jetty.

The night was slow throughout and the overall scoring reflected this on the night.

Tom Worthy who had just returned from his global trip on the impressive non peaking boat 'Ocean' won the round on the night and was fishing on Three Jetty. Tom caught one Blenny, four Gold Sinny's (2007 joint Record), five Ballan Wrasse (2007 Record 45cm) and one Mackerel (2007 Record 33cm). Tom had a winning score of 3m exactly.

In second place was pian Roach. He also had returned recently on 'Ocean' and was very keen to fish the night in. pian had a score of 2m 74cm. pian was fishing on three Jetty and caught his five mini species, one Dogfish, five Ballan Wrasse and one Scorpion (2007 Record 12cm).

In third place with a score of 1m 93cm was Robbie Robson who managed to catch one Ballan Wrasse, three Rocking's, four Gold Sinny's and one Blenny. Robbie was fishing on two jetty with Andy Olliman.

Overall the match was of an average standard and this could have been due to the amount of fresh water once again in the river. Hopefully for the next Shore match it will have stopped raining and there will be plenty of fish to catch on the match night.

The next Shore match is on 1st August.
