March
Round Three commenced in good weather and with three anglers turning up we knew the fish would be limited. Limited was to say the least.
Once again there was a lot of fresh water in the river and bites were few and far between. High Tide was at 1954 with a height of 5.2m and with three anglers we decided to proceed onto Rubble Jetty.
The tide was turning quite fast when we arrived and towards the end of the night it mellowed into a still stagnant mill pond. Dave Webber was fishing once again on the Right hand side of Rubble Jetty and caught four decent Pollock and two good Dogfish (Species Record 66cm). The fish took their time biting and this gave him a winning score of 2m 68cm.
In second place again was Robbie Robson who was fishing in the middle of Rubble Jetty. Robbie scored 1m 23cm with species of one Poor Cod, one Pollock and one Dogfish. Unfortunately Robbie hooked a Conger near the end of the night which seemed 150cm plus. After various methods of trying to place it into a drop net the hook snapped and the species was lost.
In third place with a score of Zero was Andy Olliman. Well Done Olli.
The next Shore match (Round Four) is on 04th April.
Apr
9 anglers with a total of 50 fish being measured and released fished Aprils Dockyard competition. Total numbers of fish and overall lengths are up on last month, so hopefully a sign of better things to come. It was good to see the Dogfish back on the feed.
Conditions were ideal and with high tide at 1749, fishing commenced at 1800 to 2100. For some, fishing was slow especially on 2 and 3 jetty.
Overall winner was Nick Carter with a total length of 3m 62cm from Rubble Jetty. Nick had 3 Dogfish and 5 Pollock.
In second place was last year's runner-up Pat Bennett with a total of 3m 57cm and also fishing Rubble Jetty. Pat had 4 Dogfish, 2 Pollock and a Poor Cod.
In third place was Dave Webber who was fishing 3 Jetty again. Dave had a total of 5 species of fish 2 Ballan, 2 Pollock, 1 Dogfish, 1 Pout and 5 mini species giving him a total length of 3m 29cm.
Due to the RN Boat Championships and the Inter-Services boat comp, the next shore match has been brought forward 1 week to the 10th May with high tide at 1705.
June
June's match saw yet again ideal conditions for fishing, but unfortunately only 54 fish were recorded by 8 anglers before being released. Two of these fish are worth mentioning, a Ballan Wrasse caught by Tom Worthy equalling last years specimen size of 42cm and to Marc Duncan for setting a new club specimen size for a Silver Eel. This measured in at 56cm.
Moving on Tom Worthy was again the round winner for the night with a total length of 3m 39cm. Tom managed to catch 2 Ballan, 4 Pollock, 3 Pout and 3 mini-species fishing on Rubble Jetty in position 2.
Fishing next to him in position 3 was Andy Olliman, a newcomer to Plymouth Command who was runner-up on the night with an overall length of 2m 40cm. Andy managed to catch 1 Dogfish, 1 Pollock, 1 Ballan and 5 Pout.
Another recent new comer to PCAA was Robbie Robson who came in third. Robbie was fishing his usual mark of 3 jetty and managed to catch an overall length of 2m 34cm. This included 5 Ballan and 5 mini-species. Well done to both of these anglers.
The next Shore match will take place on the 12th July, 3 days prior to this year's annual club boat competition.
July
Round 7 saw only 5 anglers fronting up to fish. With high water at 1948 and once again ideal weather conditions very few fish were measured throughout the night. The fish landed were Ballan Wrasse and the Mini-species. Only 2 Pollock were caught but both were under size and no one managed to find the Dogfish.
On the night 2 jetty proved to be the better area to fish with Nick Carter and Michael Robson drawing these pegs, and coming first and second respectively. Nick had a total length of 2m 8cm, catching 4 overall fish length of 1m 96cm.
Looking at the results, these scores will not affect placing in the table or be part of anyone's best 4. The next match is planned for 2nd August and hopefully a few more anglers will be able to show.
