Fishing Report
It was tough going at Bushyleaze for the Jutland Cup with most of the fish being caught in the same corner that is heavily wooded. We ended up taking it in turns to use the two or three hot spots. I managed to whack Stu Ellins on the nose with a huge Black and Green fly he'd just lent me, not the best way of thanking him for his help! I got similarly whacked by Dave Morton and he may have cut into my floating line with his leader. The weather was kind to us in providing a short window in a pretty poor period for the time of year, not too cold, overcast and light airs.

Most people managed to make their limit and the Cup was wrested from Colin Mould by Will Black; a worthy winner especially as he blanked at the same event last year. Well done Will.

Fishing Report
In advance of Easter Sunday's match against Kingsbridge Heavyweights, Paul Vine and Chris Anderson had a practice day on Saturday. They found out two important pieces of information. Firstly, that there were fish in only two places; North Shore and Wick. Fishing in any other part of Chew produced absolutely nothing and the clarity of the water revealed a bottom that looked like a desert. It is likely that the fish will remain is the same vicinities until the water clouds and weed starts to grow. The second, more annoying, thing identified was that the supposed double booking that forced us to change the day of the event from Saturday to Sunday did not take place.

Armed with the knowledge of where the fish were, most people had a productive day. Having changed his fortunes at Chew last year at the RN v BT match, Ted Peck was our top rod with 7 fish followed closely by Paul Vine, Jan Minall and Al Mundy on 6. This strong showing wasn't enough to beat Kingspidge but almost all had a good day.

Most fish came to static black buzzers on floating lines.

LATE ARRIVALS AND "NO SHOWS"

From an initial list of 24, 20 anglers fished on the day. As is normal with this event there were a number on no shows and one who turned up on spec'. Whilst the event is a little informal, it does require organisation and reducing the number of boats required at the last minute can cause financial losses to the fishery, since they could have sold those boats on to other customers.

As usual, the e-mail system at Abbey Wood caused peakdowns in communications nevertheless; it is disappointing when 3 people fail to turn up without making any attempt to contact the match organizer. The practical issues of organising boats and sorting out payment on the day resulted in the fishery only finding out the required number of boats at 0950; far too late for them to take action to sell the overbooked boats on. For the reasons given above it was agreed by unanimous vote on completion of the match that a new rule will be pought into effect from now on.

The entry books for any match will close 45 minutes before the start of the match and anyone who has not arrived and paid their personal contribution by that time will have to make their own arrangements with the fishery if they wish to fish on the day. This means that if you are not at the venue in time you will not receive any subsidy that may be paid from RN&RMAA funds on that day. Of course this new rule will be applied flexibly enough to manage the unavoidable.

THE MATCH

Paul Vine and Chris Anderson practiced on the day before the match and found that there were fish on the North Shore, near the chair and down Whalley Bank but fishing was very hard right up to dusk, when the fish started to rise.

North Easterly winds made the day deceptively cold despite bright sunshine for at least the first half of the day. Fish came sporadically to buzzers and nymphs fished very slowly in the normal Chew manner. A tall story from Al Mundy suggested that a very big fish came to a Booby but this fish was not seen at the weigh in. The best Associate was Duke Ellsworth who caught just three fish, a good effort on such an uncompromising day's fishing. Tony Wilkinson was just behind Duke and because he had three and some others had two out of the 25 fish caught, there were inevitably a lot of blanks, 6 in all.

The weather was kind to us and the company was good so despite the lack of fish, a good day was had by all. The final result was that the Associates won the match by a margin of just under 5 lbs.

Fishing Report
The friendly match between us and EFFA was blessed with the best day of a wet and blustery week. The EFFA team norrowly beat us in a day where fish were plentyful during the morning but the fishing got harder as the day drew on. Iain Greenlees was unable to fish due to a nagging virus so Ted Grant got to fish unexpectedly because he was in the area; he ended up paired with an old friend and had an enjoyable day, as did we all, so all was well.

Chris Anderson got paired with Bob Church and thought he was in for a fishing lesson when Bob took two fish in the first 15 minutes on very small (size 18 hook) drys. There were lots of fish rising but eventually boat pressure put them down so green nymphs fished at about 3 feet were the most sucessful pattern. Stocking took place during the match from the slipway at the lodge so a corral or peach boobie, looking like a trout pellet, was also sucessful.

Bob has poached the subject of some sort of sponsorship deal between the RN&RM and Bob Church tackle. An e-mail with details will follow when known.

Fishing Report
This years Open was fished in the middle of a very hot and sunny week. Rutland had suffered from algae blooms for two days running before the 18 competitors started. Practice on the day before by Guys up from Devonport for a "Fishing Exped", led by Keith Howard, indicated that fishing would be difficult and that the best options for clear water would be Sykes Lane.

Despite advising everyone to go to Sykes, Chris Anderson and Tony Wilkinson found crystal clear water and plenty of activity at Yellowstone, this activity did not produce many fish though, despite watching others taking fish. On leaving Yellowstone it became clear that nearly all of the South Arm was blighted by algae and running to clearer water inevitably led to Sykes Lane, where fish were being taken steadily by pulling Blobs on sinking lines.

8 people made the long trip up to Rutland only to be confronted by a blisteringly hot day and not a touch of fish. Simon Lewis on his first day back on the water, on leave from Kandahar was in that unfortunate number. Iain Greenlees had a good day taking 3 fish for 6lb 12oz, narrowly beating Al Mundy to the best Serving Rod of the day.

All credit went to Dave Morton who managed to pull out a pretty amazing 7 fish for 11lb 15oz on his home tied red blob at Old Hall Point and caught the only brown that didn't get out of the net (like the one Kev Melhuish lost leaving him with a blank).

In the end 23 fish between 18 very sun burned anglers describes this years Open.

Fishing Report
Despite having a 1200 start, we still had two anglers running round the corner of Woodford Lodge during the pief; which itself was late at 1155. The two latecommers were Damien Sheils and Nik Tompkins. By way of an excuse, Damien had flown down from Edinburgh so we let them off.

The weather for the match varied from bright sunshine in dead calm through to light rain and a good breeze. Most people experienced very long periods with no sign of fish and by the end of the day the rod average was less than 2 fish; amoung that there were 5 blanks. Fish were found in patches at the bottomb of Herrons Bay, Wick Green and Paul vine found fish in the last hour at Hollow Brook. Paul finished as top rod with 6 fish and Tony Wilkinson and Les Gordon finished with 5. The best BT rod was Peter Frazer who had 4 fish sharing a boat with Nick Tompkins, who also had 4. There was no best Blank awarded but for me Keith Howard won that with a tall story about the best fish he'd ever had at Chew rolling over at the boat after an extensive fight and throwing the hook to slowly swim gently away, with a grin on its face no doubt.

In the end the RN&RM won with 28 fish for 57lb 9 oz, to the BT total of 16 fish for 37lb 10oz.

Fishing Report
Pitsford was a major contrast to the previous day with light winds and occasionally overcast, almost perfect fishing conditions. The EFFA guys seemed to all be on good form and the Army and Navy seemed all a bit fished out from the previous day. Tony Wilkinson managed 7 fish and Martin Lester-Hichliffe had 6. Will Black had 5, Paul Vine 4, and Simon Lewis, Dave Morton and Chris Anderson each had 2. Ron Tutt was again awarded best Blank of the match; this may actually be the best Blank of the season!

In the end the combined Army and Navy weight was 120 lb 10 oz and the EFFA weight was a very creditable 188 lb 12 oz. Records were taken on paper and pencil in the traditional manner and Ron Tutt's weight of zero lbs and zero oz was accurately recorded.

We broke for lunch at 1400 and everybody agreed that it made for a good sociable event, which gave all the opportunity to discuss tactics. As always with this event a very good day out in good company was had by all.

Fishing Report
4 Holiday tickets were bought 7 Sep 06 to cover the coaching period 8 & 9 Sep. Paul Vine was unable to fish until 11 Sep due to painful illness, Ron Tutt had to attend a meeting on the Friday and Al Mundy could not make it until Saturday morning because he had only just got back into the country. Al also had to work on Monday morning (when he was promoted to Lt Cdr (congrats!)). So managing who was in what boat and how to get the best deal kept Chris busy throughout the period. The first two days were well used to identify where the fish were and we were able to better use the formal practice days to concentrate on methods, which did produce an improved outcome. Weather conditions remained more or less constant throughout the period, typically bright with light to no wind. It was obvious that the top of the water was the best bet and most effort was concentrated on the nymphing/dry fly techniques.

We had serious problems putting together a team. Tom Pettigrew, Dave Lewis, Iain Greenlees and Will Harkness didn't turn up and failed to get messages to Chris, or anyone else, before he left work 30 Aug that they would not be present. Frustratingly, Chris found himself in a position of having turned Associates away only to find that those that he had expected deciding not to come forward to fish. In the end Al Mundy managed to get Andy Burges to fish and Ron Tutt got Mike Barfoot Franks to come up as an Old Lag. We could only field a team of 12 Servicemen and two Old Lags; normally we select a team of 14 from 18. We even had to call on Bill Jones to fish in the team, he is legally allowed because he carries an ID card and works in uniform despite being a retired officer. We joked that no one would complain unless he caught the biggest fish or bagged up or something.

On the day Bill went straight to the place he knew the fish were (Berrybuts) and used the tactic that he knew worked (Floating line with a team of Crunchers); he bagged up before 1500. Al Mundy and John Manners also bagged up and everyone in the team caught at least 3 fish so our combined weight of 119 lbs 14½ oz was as good a result as we have achieved for many years. The Army won the match with 166 lb 14½ oz and the RAF came a nail-bitingly close second on 163 lb 13½ oz.

For the Old Lags, Mike Barfoot-Franks bagged up and Ron Tutt had 2. The Army won with 22 lb 5½ oz followed by the RAF with 21 lb 12½ oz and then the Navy with 21 lb 7½ oz. On more fish to any team would have drastically changed the results.

The computer failed to generate a believable result and could not be reconciled with the paper records. Such a close finish demanded a recount and this was conducted using the paper records; there is a lesson to be learnt here!
