Messge from Ewen Murray
Dear Chris
Thank you very much for giving our fly site a mention on your website www.theflysite.com
It is very encouraging for us to see that what we are trying to do - provide good quality flies at a reasonable price - is appreciated. You would not believe how many people think the flies must be rubbish if the prices are so low.
The site is ideal for clubs where members can "club together" to get flies cheaply and split them up between themselves to enjoy the low prices. Some of the Scottish club secretaries, living up the Scotsman's reputation, buy the flies for the club and sell them on to the members to generate funds for the club. This has proved useful for clubs where the secretary is in "the know" and turned up at a loch with a couple of packets of what's catching. They are almost always stampeded by members wanting to buy "what works" on the day thus generating funds for their clubs.
I don't know if any of your members are grayling fishers but we have, today, launched our range of Czech Nymphs which are amongst the best flies I have ever seen. The only other site with comparable quality Czech Nymphs is selling them at 60% above our price. These are "super leaded" to sink fast, especially useful for the faster waters where the grayling like to hang out.
Later this month we will be launching our full range of Snatchers- there are a few on the site at the moment- but the full range will appear towards the end of November. I don't think this fly has caught on in England yet but it has been absolutely devastating in Scotland over the past 18 months or so where is has been developed by a number of trusted experts. It has proved itself not only for normal conditions but has become the fly of choice for the "hard days" when nothing seems to work.
A lot of the competition guys now swear by them (obviously not the bead head variants').
The Snatcher is basically a palmered nymph tied on a C16 grub hook. The fly is palmered right down the body to the bend of the hook giving the angler the opportunity to fish the fly really slow and impart a very enticing pulse motion when fishing the fly.
The standard Snatcher comes with a goose bigot thorax. We have developed a bead head variant for those who want to fish deeper (the fly works best when fished with a floating line, with a long leader, if necessary, as this imparts an upwards motion to the fly when retrieved) and a real jungle cock variant is on the way.
There will be a few new developments in the coming months. Although we carry a full range of flies, our passion is imitative fishing, dry fly or nymph. We are constantly developing new dry and nymph patterns and we have plenty dour wild pown trout up here in Scotland to try them out on. We then select the best of them for the website as we tend to find that what works on sulky peat loch pownies works even better on the more aggressive rainbows.
We have also been busy on the reel front. We are developing a new wide arbour, disk drag reel which can be used in both fresh and saltwater. I don't know how many of your members get the opportunity to fish for bonefish, redfish, barracuda or the like but we have found it an expensive exercise having to buy one set of kit for fresh water and another set for saltwater fishing. Our new reels should be ready for the Spring and will cost about half what the big boys are charging.
We will be out and about at a number of game fairs this year again. The first is in Belfast at the end of January, and then we will be at the Borders Game fair in Hawick, the Scottish Game Fair at Scone and the Lanark Game Fair at Moffat. We will also be at game fairs at Glammis and also Moy near Inverness.
We do this for two reasons:
- to let the anglers see and touch the flies - it doesn't matter what you do with a web site there is no substitute for actually handling the flies.
- to give us an opportunity to talk to the anglers, to hear what the want and to hear what they want to see on the website.
If any of your members are coming to any of these Game Fairs please come and see us, we would love to hear what the have to say.
Finally I would like to thank you again for the mention on your website and if you or any of your members have any comments or have any flies you would like to see on our site please let us know at info@fliesbuythedozen.co.uk
Thanks again
Ewen
